Many plants with white variegation tend to be more delicate than their green counterparts, and the variegated Monstera Deliciosa Albo Variegata is no exception. They produce less chlorophyll, and as such photosynthesize a great deal less. Growing them is not only slow but also requires a certain level of skill.

Variegation refers to the naturally-formed lighter patches on a plant’s leaves. These light patches may be light green, yellowish, or even white, depending on the plant species.

Variegation refers to the naturally occurring lighter patches on the leaves of a plant. Depending on the plant species, these light patches can be light green, yellowish, or even white.

The lack of chlorophyll in the leaves is actually stressful for the Swiss Cheese plant because the leaves have less surface area to photosynthesize. As a result, variegated Monsteras grow at a much slower rate than their non-variegated counterparts.

Monsteras exhibit two types of variegation: marbling and sectoral.

Marbled leaves have patches of light and dark color that are evenly distributed across the surface. When there are large patches of white on the leaf, this is referred to as sectoral variegation. At the same time, a leaf can have both marbling and sectoral variegation.

Why is Variegated Monstera so Expensive?

Because of their scarcity and popularity, variegated Monsteras are extremely expensive. Because the leaves lack chlorophyll, they require lighter and grow more slowly. Slower growth means fewer new plants and slower propagation.
